CBD, or cannabidiol, is a plant-derived compound known as a phyto-cannabinoid. It is most commonly found in the resinous flowers of the hemp plant. Hemp is a cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% or less of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. CBD itself doesn't contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high.  CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system, an internal network of cell receptors, to help regulate critical functions within our bodies that help restore healthy homeostasis.

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp and CBD, removing it from Schedule 1 listing as defined by the Controlled Substances Act. The Farm Bill made hemp legal in the United States, making it virtually impossible to make CBD illegal — that would be like making oranges legal, but keeping orange juice illegal. While federally legal and all 50 states have laws legalizing CBD, each state has different regulations regarding the sale of finished goods containing CBD.

Summit Sips, LLC, producer of trētap, complies with all rules and regulations outlined by the Vermont Department of Agriculture.

Hemp has a rich history of medicinal use, across cultures, for thousands of years. CBD has been studied extensively in recent decades for its significant therapeutic potential, including the alleviation of pain, anxiety, seizures and inflammation. Cannabinoids affect individuals differently so there is no guarantee of its efficacy for a particular purpose.

Currently, the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration is a prescription oil called Epidiolex. It's approved to treat two types of epilepsy in children. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and, in some cases, stop them altogether. While CBD is being studied as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and anxiety, research supporting the drug's benefits is still limited.

It’s important to note that there’s still research being done on the efficacy and benefits of CBD and hemp in general. In December 2015, the FDA eased the regulatory requirements to allow researchers to conduct CBD trials. A surge in scientific publications followed which have found preclinical and clinical evidence documenting value for CBD in some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Evidence points toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system. However, further research is still needed to fully understand its efficacy.

Some of the reported benefits include:

  • Relaxation and stress relief. CBD may promote a sense of calmness and relaxation, potentially helping people manage stress and anxiety. For example, a study found that students felt less social anxiety before a big speech after taking a 600-milligram CBD capsule.
  • Sleep support. CBD-infused drinks might aid in improving sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing insomnia symptoms. Studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep, in part by helping address chronic pain and anxiety. For example, one study found that people who experienced anxiety, sleep troubles or both saw improvements after consuming CBD daily for a month.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects. CBD has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory properties, which could help people who live with chronic pain due to conditions like arthritis. For example, as study found that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related and inflammation without evident side-effects. Other research identifies how CBD may inhibit inflammatory and neuropathic pain, which are difficult to treat.
  • Addiction: CBD can help lower cravings for tobacco and heroin under certain conditions, according to some research in humans. Animal models of addiction suggest it may also help lessen cravings for other addictive substances such as alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and stimulants.

CBD is generally considered safe, even at the high doses that have been part of clinical trials thus far. These levels (hundreds of milligrams per dose) generally far exceed what most people are consuming.  According to a report from the World Health Organization, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.  Potential negative side effects can be unintended lethargy or stimulation. CBD can also interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize other medications.

It can. Consult your healthcare practitioner before consuming CBD if you are taking medication. Studies have shown that CBD can inhibit the metabolizing of certain drugs.

Summit Sips, LLC requires purchasers to be 18+ years of age. It is legal for CBD to be used for therapeutic benefit in minors, but it must be purchased and dispensed by the parents/guardians. This is best done under the supervision of a health care practitioner.

No. trētap CBD is infused with pure CBD isolate which is free of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the cannabinoid that can make people feel intoxicated or high. CBD can actually lessen the intoxicating effects of THC.

No. Drug tests verify the presence of THC. trētap’s CBD is infused with CBD isolate which is a pure CBD concentrate. It does not contain any THC.

If you buy a product containing CBD, make sure that there is a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from and independent and reputable laboratory attesting to the purity of the CBD. trētap provides a COA for each and every one of its products.

A cause for concern when purchasing a CBD drink is the unreliability of the purity and dosage of many CBD in products on the market. For example, a recent study of 84 CBD products bought online showed that more than a quarter of the products contained different CBD quantities than labeled, and THC was found in 18 of the 84 products (21%).

trētap uses a pure CBD isolate because it is one of the most well-researched forms of the cannabinoid with extensive data verifying efficacy and bioavailability. Because our isolate is pure CBD, it  allows us to create a beverage with the same consistent high quality every single time. Also, since trētap is a totally THC-free product, you can enjoy trētap every single time without concerns of unwanted side effects associated with THC or the potential of a failed drug screening.
